What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient system of healing practised in the East for

thousands of years, developed for the maintenance of good health and for

the treatment of disease and disorders.

Acupuncture is a fully holistic approach to diagnosis and treatment, taking

into consideration an individual’s specific signs and symptoms, their

emotional state, spirit, environment and their constitution. All these factors

are incorporated into diagnosing and treating an individual’s condition.

Acupuncture is based on Chinese Medicinal theory that the body works

correctly due to the sufficient supply and smooth flow of Qi (pronounced

chee) throughout the body. Qi, or energy, is the vital motivating force of the

body. Qi can be likened to the electric current running through a computer,

without it the computer would not function and any disruption, blockage or

deficiency of that current will result in problems.

In a similar manner the human body’s energy can be negatively influenced

by trauma, exhaustion, excess emotional states (such as grief, anxiety,

anger and fear) stress, infections, hereditary factors, weather conditions and

Qi is conducted through the body through 12 main and 8 secondary channels

(called Meridians). By inserting fine needles into specific points along

those channels the body’s own healing process can be activated, dispersing

blockages and tapping into reservoirs of energy.
